Fall In

Well, wasn’t that fun? Six weeks filled with sun and fun. Apart from the bits when it p*ssed with rain (quite a lot) and we all drove each other mad (quite a lot). But now it’s all over and the children are back at school. For the first time in months the house is quiet. An hour feels like three and I’m getting stuff done without being interrupted 50 million times. That might include binge watching the first series of Doctor Foster (am I the only person on the planet who didn’t watch it when it first came out?). Anyway, back to school it is. See below for this week’s homework. Just what the doctor ordered.

Current white in the fridge: Tesco Finest Greco

Price: £9.00 - Buy From Tesco

Just one of the loveliest new Italian whites to cross my palate in recent weeks. From the Campania region in southern Italy (Naples is nearby), this is a sunny white with ripe, easy-going citrus fruits along with a touch of honeysuckle. The grape is called Greco and you won’t find it really anywhere else. If you like your wines on the ripe rather than rather tart side, you must give this a go. Think of it as homework. Try it with grilled chicken. Or crisps.

Current red in the rack: Heredad del Rey Seleccion Reservada

Price: £5.99 - Buy From Waitrose

This is normally £7.99 but it’s on offer at the moment, making it a steal at the price. Juicy, bramble-fruit loaded red with a whiff of bonfire about it from the under-the-radar Yecla region tucked down in the southeast corner of Spain. It’s a blend of Syrah (aka Shiraz) and the Monastrell grape, bringing a touch of blueberry to the party. Lovely on its own but even better with sausage and lentil stew.

i find myself a little off the leash, buying ‘fine wines’ discounted to £15 – £20 recently, normally i stop at £8 – £10; i’m figuring that in a restaurant i’d be paying £20+ for base wines & £50 for these ‘fine wines’ so on the basis of ‘yolo’ why not indulge a bit while enjoying the Mrs’ spag bol? am i unnecessarily out of control? – love the blog btw.
